And why were all these people happy? I can’t tell you for sure why. But I think I can make a pretty good guess.
They were eiyoying the unique companionship they share with their horses. The thrill of competing with an animal they knew, or were getting to know, in a new and challenging environment. The pride they felt for their horses.
They were eiyoying the hospitality and friendship of the Rappahannock Hunt members who helped put on the show. And they were eiyoying being outside with other people who shared the same enthusiasm and love for horses and competition, and the unity that comes with sharing and experiencing an uncomfortable, trying situation with others.
I’m sure everyone had second thoughts about the showM %hey stood in the rain, shivering and soaking. But I don’t think that anyone who competed at Montpelier that clay regretted going there.
Though some people might think the rain made the show a failure, I disagree. When an event can make people happy, despite miserable conditions, and help exhibitors rediscover the true meaning of horse shows, it can’t be considered anything but a roaring success.
