A resident told the council that costs are higher for working on an old house than for building a new one.
“This ordinance will not require anyone to fix up his or her house, but if we have nice old houses in town that are a part of our heritage, we want to preserve them,” said council member Bill Wickens. “Demolishing our old houses or cabins would be a mistake, and we have the chance to protect them before the process starts. ”
Wickens said that reasonable changes or new construction can be made. “This is a minimal ordinance, and the ARB will be made up of longtime residents,” he said.
The ARB will probably adopt a list of automatically acceptable colors so that people wishing to use a non-approved color could come before the board, the councilman said. All other colors on that list would be acceptable and the property owner would need no other authority to use that color.
“I am concerned about what could happen to a town this small and fragile when developmental pressures begin,” Wickens said. “We have something here worth preserving, and we should preserve it.”
