When I was in the fifth grade, I reluctantly took home my report card at the conclusion of the second term.
As usual, my grades dropped in nearly every subject from those achievements recorded in the first term, the way every report card noted my acquired laziness.
Yet, in the comments section of the card, my teacher wrote, “Paul has worked diligiently this term.”
Now, I didn’t even know what diligently meant, let alone how to pronounce it.
When I opened the dictionary later that day — much of which was spent hiding in my room trying to escape the wrath of parents who never appreciated the humor in my rollercoaster scholastic career the way I did — I learned that I had worked hard during that last term. So how, then, could my grades had fallen off so severely?
