If you read an advertisement for an auction in which a complete set of Depression Glass, for instance, is being offered in one particular pattern, stop and ask yourself, “A complete set? In that pattern?”
Once in a blue moon it might happen — but just such advertisements, run almost weekly, mean that those are most likely to be reproductions. Reproduced glassware is supposed to have an “R” displayed on each piece, but not all glass companies abide by that.
There’s another practice to be aware of: a number of years ago, there was an auction which offered the contents of a small, one-family house in the county. The auction flyer mentioned that this was an Estate Auction with lots of oldies but goodies. Because the house was so small and there wasn’t much space for parking, the auction was to be held at the local fairgrounds.
Although the auctioneer w'as unknowm to me, I decided to attend anyhow'. Well, there w'ere lots of oldies. In fact, I discovered that there were too many oldies for one small single-family house. Among the items were 15 rocking chairs, six dressers, 10 beds of all shapes and sizes, all set up, seven dining room tables with accompanying chairs, several refrigerators, sawhorse tables loaded down with dinnerware and glassware, as well as the usual assortment of farm implements, tools, ropes, chains, etc.
I worked my way through the crowd until I was next to the auctioneer’s stand, still carrying the auction flyer in my hand. During a short break I asked one of the auction clerks if this wras a consignment auction. He replied that it was not — that it was advertised as an Estate Auction. Then, I asked him if the house was indeed a small one-family dwelling — he assured me that it w*as!
Since everything I’d seen there indicated quite the opposite, I told the clerk that I tended to disagree — that the auction had all the earmarks of a consignment auction — that NO small, single-family house could pos
