Any type of mechanical or abrasive damage to the stem of a tree will be there forever. Trees cannot
heal tissue, they can only shut off damaged tissue then grow over it. Once a tree is damaged, it will always
carry a record of wounds in its wood. The wood around the damage sites will be weaker and more prone to physical damage.
Tree abuse can come back to haunt you when your large trees come crashing down on your house or car during a storm. Take care of them and they will repay you with shade and other benefits for the rest of their lives.
