Klan to march in Radford
RADFORD — Hours before the Christian Knights of the Ku Klux Klan march in Christiansburg, the organization is to parade through this nearby city.
Radford City Manager Robert Asbury said Aug. 21 he has issued a permit for the white supremacist group to march from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 20 on the sidewalk - of Norwood Street from the Radford Senior Center to Tyler Avenue and back.
Asbury said the permit was granted to the KKK group at the request of Virginia Grand Dragon George Thompson. James G. Smith picked up the permit, he said.
Asbury said the group must stay on the sidewalks on the north side of Norwood Street. No vehicles will be allowed during the march.
Tunnel contract awarded
RICHMOND — Virginia’s Highway and Transportation Board has awarded a record $126 million contract for a 4,732-foot long double tunnel at Hampton Roads.
Board members added another first in their Aug. 21 meeting by approving highway and maintenance money to build railroad tracks.
The $126 million tunnel project, a section of the new Interstate 664 bridge, is part of a 26-mile long project expected to cost about $700 million by its completion in 1990, officials said.
Board members awarded the tunnel project, which will cross the James River and connect Newport News and Suffolk, to Morrison-Knudsen Co. of Boise, Idaho, and Interbeton B. V. of the Netherlands.
