The task force reported that Governor Gerald Baliles has submitted 51 counties to the U. S. Department of Agriculture for declaration as drought disaster areas. The Secretary of Agriculture has approved 17 of those applications. VDACS continues to work with the Cooperative Extension Service, federal ASCS officials and out-of-state farmers and organizations in arranging the transportation and distribution of donated hay for livestock producers. The department has established a toll-free hotline (1-800-562-1833) for farmers who need assistance.
The task force stressed the need for localities to monitor the Water levels in municipal supply reservoirs to establish trends which will assist in predicting the extent and duration of any supply problems.
The task force report is distributed by the Virginia Department of Emergency Services. It is compiled with information provided by the National Weather Service, U. S. Geological Survey, Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Virginia Department of Health, Virginia Water Control Board, Virginia Division of Forestry and the Office of the State Climatologist.
