The third house on the tour is the home of Eino and Celine Siira, 5 miles southwest of Washington and .7 mile north of Rt. 211 on State Rt. 612 in Old Hollow. The Siiras began construction in 1980 doing all of the interior finishing themselves which included hanging sheet rock. The entry interior is brightened by a large skylight in a blond oak-lined chase. Although it has a formal living room, the “living” part of the house is centered around a comfortable sitting area with a large diagonal corner fireplace adjoining a large, bright, efficient kitchen which runs the width of the house and affords a lovely view down Old Hollow. Downstairs is a large recreation room/sewing room also looking down Old Hollow, adjacent to a workshop and sauna. Displayed throughout the house are mementos of the Siirar’s fourteen years in Africa and Panama where Eino Siira was an agricultural advisor for the State Department. This bright, roomy house was designed for easy living with plenty of room for the pursuit of hobbies and work. Tea will be served here both afternoons of the tour.
Also open during that weekend will be the Rappahannock Library, built around 1853 and formerly a Presbyterian Church, located on Gay Street; the Rappahannock Historical Society building also on Gay Street, and Washington’s first museum on the corner of Main and Porter Streets.
