son’s art during that period. Wide pine board floors, mantels and panelled windows in the house are original. The living room mantel is believed to have been done by Hessian soldiers - turned carpenters who stayed in the area following the Revolutionary War. The summer kitchen/servants’ quarters, also built of stone, is connected to the main house by a 30-foot portico. This section now serves as guest quarters. Caledonia doubles as a working cattle farm and bed-and-breakfast and is owned and operated by Phil Irwin.
Next to be shown is Heritage House in the center of “downtown Washington” at the corner of Main and Jett Streets. It was built in 1837 as a modest 16 x 32 foot two story frame structure by Henry Johnson, upon his marriage to Eliza Ann Grove. The builder was the grandson of William Johnson, who had 400 acres on nearby Red Oak Mountain, a part of the Fairfax grant. Heritage House originally consisted of two rooms below and two bedrooms above accessible by an outside stairway, Slave kitchen/quarters are under the original section as is a hand dug well, five feet in diameter.
