Washington’s birthday bash
’ The Town of Washington will celebrate its 240th anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 19 with an evening of music, food and fun on Gay St. in front of the courthouse complex. Beginning at 5 p.m. there will be volleyball for the adults and games for the children. At 6 p.m., the bluegrass band New Liberty will perform, followed by the Cross Country band at 8 p.m. There will dinners available, featuring barbecue, hot dogs and hamburgers, beer, wine and sodas. All proceeds will benefit the Washington Volunteer Fire Department.
Red Cross seeks donations
The Fauquier-Rappahannock Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking contributions to rebuild its disaster relief fund, which has been depleted by the assistance necessary after the floods last month in Markham and Delaplane. According to spokesman Tim Schultz, the chapter has assisted 11 families (totalling 39 individuals) and spent more than $2,700 on emergency supplies of food and clothing. "We regret that we must come to the community to ask for assistance," Mr. Schultz said, "but we are a small chapter, and are not really equipped to handle a disaster of this size." Contributions may be sent to the Fauquier Chapter, American Red Cross, 53 South Third St., Warrenton, Va. 22186. Make checks payable to "Fauquier Chapter, American Red Cross."
