In fact when practice started for the 1989 track season, the track was not only unsuitable for hosting meets, it w'asn’t really suitable for practice. Clumps of grass were growing in most of the lanes, and there were holes in the graveled surface. Rappahannock’s first home track meet was canceled on the day it was supposed to occur. After that fact became generally known, the school administration made a commitment that the track would be repaired in time for the 1990 season.
However, in June Mike Lacika, then the high school’s athletic director, reported to the School Board that the only firm interested in doing the work to repair the track estimated that the work would cost $7,700. The School Board agreed that there was no money in the new budget for such an expensive repair job and decided to let the new athletic director try to get community support for repairing the track.
