If the branch is large and likely to split during removal, it is recommended that several cuts be made. The first is an undercut six or so inches up the branch from the main stem. The second cut should be made from the topside of the branch about one inch further from the main stem than the undercut. By so doing, the branch will break cleanly between the undercut and the uppercut without splitting. The final cut involves removal of the branch stub just outside the bark collar at the branch’s junction with the stem.
Simple care taken during construction and paving, use of lawn and garden equipment, and pruning can pay big dividends in maintaining the vigor of yard trees. Vigorous trees, like vigorous people, are best able to defend themselves against the many insects and disease-causing organisms that are always around and seeking a weakened tree in which they can become established.
