Then, the following week, the Wine Auction and Festival at the Swedenburgs’ historic Valley View Farm on U.S. 50, one mile east of Middleburg, features an honorary celebrity auctioneer: Delaplane’s famous Willard Scott.

Some of the events are serious, such as the competition for the Jefferson Wine Trophy, but others aren’t — the barrel-rolling races, cork-throwing contest and waiters’ races, for example.

The Vinifera Wine Growers, which sponsors the event in the Middleburg area each year, has signed up 20 vineyards to compete for various trophies.

The entrants include vineyards in Luray, Waterford, Madison, Charlottesville, Culpeper, Middleburg, Leesburg and Winchester.

The Wine Auction and Festival costs $10 per person, under 21 free. The Vinifera Association solicits
