Mr. Smith said he has talked with Superintendent David Gangel about the track, and he is hopeful that it can be repaired enough to hold the one home track meet scheduled for next spring. “Cinder tracks (which are actually gravel) always require a lot of maintenance,” he said. “You can’t just paint lane lines; it has to be redone with lime for each meet. It would sure be nice one day to get an all-weather surface there.
“I’m interested in getting to know the strengths and weaknesses of the athletic program,” he said. “I’m real interested in working with the community. Athletics and all extra curricular activities are important parts of the whole educational process. They focus the attention of the community on the schools. They are all going to get a lot of my attention.”
Mr. Smith said he has also been involved with Mr. Toth in revising the student handbook. He said the handbook wouldn’t show many changes, but that “sometimes a rule has to be explained more thoroughly, sometimes a section can be dropped.” Parts of the handbook have to be changed because of the shift to a seven-period day, he explained.
“I’m impressed with the direction the school division seems to be headed,” he said. “It’s like we’re moving in a real positive direction.
