we were at last connected. Voices were loud and clear, and the musical jingle that preceded the automatic weather report had good quality. For me, knowing quite a bit about electronics and cables from my work as a radio astronomer, it was another example of the wonders of high technology.
Bob Jefferson told a different story. He happened to be looking out from his bam the day before when the telephone man did the job.
It was raining hard, and our gate was locked, and you couldn’t see anything of our farmhouse from the road. The telephone man climbed over the gate and began checking out the grey boxes that marked the course of the line. Then he must have forgotten a testing tool, because he came back, climbed the gate, and went into the truck for a few minutes. On the second trip he was lost to view in the Ravine for about ten minutes, before he returned, very wet, with loops of wire in his hand. Then he jumped in the truck and drove off.
