pin-pointed our farm precisely, and I felt I was speaking to a person who knew Rappahannock County, a resident, maybe even a neighbor. So I opened up a conversation.
“Never been there,” the operator said, “I’m sitting in Richmond reading what’s on the computer screen.”
With that, she entered the billing arrangements into the computer, gave me what was to be the phone number, and promised a connection for “close of business” that day. It was all very efficient, but it didn’t quite work out. Later, when I called the farm number from Washington, the line was busy, even though no one was in the house.
My worst fears came to the fore again. I was sure a woodchuck had gnawed through the buried cable, or maybe the line had been carried away in a gullywasher we had experienced the previous fall, which took out bushes, banking and the bridge.
So I called Richmond again, and a second operator courteously promised that “ring tone” would be provided by “close of business,” or someone would report back to tell me where the computer said the problem was.
No one called back, and when I tested the number it rang normally, like it should. Success, All Hail to the computer! When we arrived at the house, we used our new phone right away to let our friend^ know
