Second, laws are enacted by elected legislators to protect tfce p^ie^welfare; Law enforcement officers, be they state — police troopers or sheriff s deputies, are empowered to'eiilSrce those jaws. They have no say in whether the laws are right, or the punishment just.
If members of the community disagree with those laws, the place to try to change them is the legislature. To criticize the law enforcement personnel whose job it is to enforce the law is unfair.
Though we certainly don’t want to discourage letters to the editor, the most effective way to address a law perceived as wrong is by a letter to our elected representatives. It may not get the desired result, but that is the proper channel in our democracy.
By all means, write that letter to the editor. But write one to our congressman, our senators, and our state representatives too.
And finally, as we pointed out before, Mr. Blanchard had to know the risk he was taking. To quote TV cop Tony Baretta, “Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time.”
