What Bob didn’t know was that the telephone man had written us a pleasant note, curled up the paper and stuffed it in the padlock at the gate. He had also left a soggy telephone directory on the back stoop. It was an indicator of some of the problems he had had, but it was no problem for us—we soon had it dried out, and pressed flat.

Later in the week a third telephone operator called, this time to the farm, to explain an item on the

billing. She explained that, according to the computerf our farm had a long, buried line, and the bill would have to show an additional monthly charge of $2.

“Fair enough,” I said, thanking her for the service.

I was looking out of the window, through the bare branches of the wild cherry trees toward the thick, dark Ravine. I thought of that buried line, running somehow under the stream bed, weaving between the rocks, and skirting the place where the family of foxes had made their dens. For once in your life, I said to myself, you’ve got a bargain.
