“They say that any time you have a good com year, you have a bad hay year,” Mr. Stafford said, citing an old farm saying. “It’s true this year.” He said the last few weeks of warmer weather have been conducive to com growth.
“Those raising field crops had a heck of a time getting them planted,” Mr. Stafford said, referring to the soggy conditions in May and June, adding the cooler weather and continuous rainfall inhibited growth.
The later rainfall during July hampered the wheat harvest. “Wet weather is not conducive to harvesting wheat,” he pointed out, explaining that the heavy combines used in the wheat fields were not able to be used due to soggy ground conditions. “A lot was left standing in the field, causing the test weight to go down.”
Mr. Stafford said once the matured grain is rained upon, the weight is reduced therefore the value.
