The staff members knew that their third, fourth, and fifth grade charges didn’t want to be reminded of the classrooms they were enjoying not being in. So they mixed information into the games they played with activities such as “Meet the Tree” and “Bat.”
“I liked meet the tree,” said Jamie Harris. “I was blindfolded in the woods, I’d feel a tree and describe it, then someone would spin me around and take the blindfold off. I had to find the tree using what I had learned about it with the blindfold on.”
“Bat” was a game everyone could play together. One camper was the bat, and was blindfolded. Four other campers became moths and the rest of the group formed a circle within which the bat hunted for the moths. Because the bat was blind, it had to rely on its radar to catch its meal. The bat sent out its radar signal by calling out “bat” and the moths would answ'er back “moth.”
