Citing a U.S. Justice Department study, Coleman claimed that, although it costs about $18,000 a year to keep a person in prison, it costs society $430,000 if that person is on the streets involved in criminal activity.
Coleman also advocated a “boot camp” prison concept for certain young offenders, which would serve as a “last chance” for them to mend their ways and become productive members of society. The concept is being tried in several states, and Coleman said recidivism rates have dropped from nearly 50 percent to only two percent.
“Now I’m not saying that in six months you can completely change everything that’s happened in a person’s life — but the success of this program is really astonishing.”
Benedetti, the underdog challenging Attorney General Mary Sue Terry, also criticized his opponent for not taking a tough stand in the fight against drugs, saying she has “failed miserably."
Benedetti has said that CADRE, a program designed to curb drug and alcohol use among youths and founded by Terry7, has not been proven effective.
