william lining, cnairman oi me Laorary coara, signed a contract on Sunday with Neilsen Construction Compary of Harrisonburg to build the new library for $474,725.
This is $20,845 less than Neilsen’s original bid-of $495,570. Some of the reductions have been achieved by changing the specifications for the building, including $2,850 by switching from Pella brand to Marvin windows. Another $500 was cut from plumbing fixtures, and $3,000 from the contract for the heating and air-conditioning system.
The bulk of the reductions in the bid price were accomplished by taking out of the contract some of the finishing work. Instead of being included in the contract price the Library Board will attempt to contract independently for these items as the building nears completion.
The largest item in this group is a reduction of $9,720 for carpeting. The board will attempt to purchase the carpeting locally. Also cut were $2,900 for cabinetry, plumbing fixtures and shelving in the multi-purpose room’s kitchen and storage area. An additional $1,375 was saved by leaving the main room in the basement unfurnished. Another $500 was cut by leaving out a plaque.
Dr. Young said, “It is our assumption that all these things will be completed as part of the completion of the interior and furnishings.”
