Demand for fuelwood from the George Washington National Forest has increased, and it’s not even chilly yet.
The Deerfield Ranger District office in Staunton has issued 50 permits to date, normally the number issued by Oct. 30. Rangers in other district offices report requests are up, too.
Forest officials attribute the increase to a hike in fuel oil prices brought on by the Middle East crisis. May be, but the “Farmer’s Almanc” is predicting a harsh winter.
Nevertheless, Forest Supervisor Wayne Kelley reports a considerable amount of dead and down wood available in the 1.1 million acre forest. Only dead and down wood may be collected.
