Most of us know the answers to those questions and recognize the need for change. But “How?” That’s not so easy! We can get very attached to things that are, in the end, bad for us, whether sweets, liquor, drugs, or letting someone else support us.

Fortunately our Congressman, D. French Slaughter Jr., understands history’s lesson, holds to sound principles, works constantly for needed changes. He has repeatedly sponsored legislation leading to a Balanced Budget Amendment, to the line item veto (which works for most state governors, Virginia’s included) for the President, for reduced involvement and spending by the Federal Government. Congressman Slaughter knows, lives by and supports the character and moral standards that underlie every healthv society.

But in the important areas, in recognizing the need to live within one’s means, to limit the reach and size of governments, the importance of the individual, personal responsibility of every person for all done or not done, he makes no mistake. Qualified, sound, deserving of reelection in 1990, I urge Rappahannock County’s voters to return him to Congress on Nov. 6.

Mr. Marocchi is the chairman of the Rappahannock County Republican Committee.
