Forum seeks
answers to
literacy needs

On Wednesday, Nov. 7, a Community Analysis Forum will be convened in the Trinity Church parish hall in Washington at noon to . consider what is needed for a strong, coordinated literacy movement in Rappahannock County.
It is known that about 30 percent of the county’s population are functionally illiterate, and that other adults need supplementary education. The purpose of the forum is to mobilize both the public and private sectors to work together on this challenging issue.
The forum is to be guided by the Region 6 Literacy Coordinating Committee, based in Charlottesville. It is one of 12 such committees, established by the Virginia Literacy Initiative, that have been charged with helping localities assess the educational opportunities available for undereducated adults and developing a plan to fill any gaps that might exist.
Rappahannock County was selected as a site for a Community Analysis Forum by the Region 6 Committee in the hope of building on the momentum generated by the recent formation of Literacy Volunteers of America - Rappahannock County, a volunteer literacy group that is now preparing to address the issue of functional illiteracy in the county.
