What ot our national character and morality? Here is how one writer recently characterized the country’s situation in these vital aspects of national health: “the degradation experienced by the many . . . citizens bound to that system ... we call welfare, the collapse of standards in all the institutions of our cultural life - education, literature and the arts, our . . . lagging performance in the world’s economy . . . the extinction of the old republican ideal of responsible citizenship, and the moral decay we measure daily in rates of divorce, abortion, child molestation, illegitimacy, AIDS cases, drugs, and business fraud.”
It is my thesis that big, growing, bureaucratic, powerful governments are, on balance, bad; that there is a correlation between overgrown governments and the decline in their citizens’ character, ability and willingness to work hard and to stay involved in politics. I am also convinced that we can turn the trend around if we will: we have only to learn from history, remember the intentions and ideas of our government’s Founders, recover that sense of personal responsibility without which freedom cannot endure.
