To the editor:
The Rappahannock News (read that Arundel) has made it quite clear over the years that it will endorse a dead dog as long as it wears the hat of the National Liberal Democratic Party.
Last week’s editorial endorsements, therefore came as no surprise. I’m sure that the News’ endorsement of Senator Warner was quite painful, but it must be at least "a silly millimeter” better to be a Republican than a LaRouche supporter!
The News’ endorsement of David Smith for the Seventh District Congressional seat over incumbent D. French ^laughter Jr. seems to be based on some interesting but very strange rationale.
Presumably, Mr. Slaughter would have better served his contituents by lowering himself to participating in the mudslinging, distortion of facts and name-calling campaign that his opposition wanted. Indeed, they have been frustrated in their attempt to stage a schoolyard fistfight because Mr. Slaughter wouldn’t throw a punch!
For the most part, it is true, the Slaughter campaign has only reacted to the distortions of facts presented by the Smith organization. Yes, there was a reaction when Mr. Smith tried to convince the voters that Mr. Slaughter had voted for the Congressional pay raise, when, in fact, the record shows that Mr. Slaughter voted “No” on all six votes that were taken on the subject. Maybe Mr. Smith’s real calling
