On Saturday, Oct. 27, Wakefield School in Huntly hosted its annual Certamen or Latin competition. Schools throughout the region participate in these Certamen, and generally each school hosts the contest once a year.

Wakefield’s Certamen was attended by 17 schools from as far away as Charlottesville and Richmond. There were a total of 36 teams from the visiting schools competing in three levels of Latin; and an additional three teams in a firstever Greek competition.

Marilyn Welch, chairwoman of the Wakefield Classics Department, said that these certamen teach students good sportsmanship in addition to keeping students’ knowledge
