“He could be pretty gruff,” Judge Snead’s wife Lois said. One day when their son Sam was about 11, he fell out of an apple tree and broke his arm. They took him to his uncle, and when they got there Sam was sort of lounging back in the car as though he expected to be carried into the doctor’s office, Judge Snead said. “John said, ‘Sam, get out of the car. You broke your arm, not your legs.’”
But Mrs. Lindsey reported he was a lot more patient with children than their parents. Frequently he got calls from parents whose children had eaten something they shouldn’t. They would ask what to do, she said. “He told them to first give themselves a whipping for leaving it where the child could get it and then bring the child in to get his stomach pumped.”
