Senator Richard Lugar has insightfully declared that President Bush can’t make war without public support. But the president is probably being advised by the few people who have direct access to him that we can precipitate a little, painless war designed to persuade Saddam Hussein to capitulate before he is wiped out, or that we can launch a swift and decisive, musical comedy war of several weeks duration and few casualties on our side that will permanently crush Iraq.

Tell our representatives in Congress and the President that any war is an unnecessary evil of incalculable consequences that you expect us to have the intelligence to draw back from.
