“He’s got so many children named for him that he delivered,” Mrs. Thornton said. But after about 10 years, when more hospitals were available locally, he de-' cided “home deliveries were too risky, and would refer the women to hospitals. ”
She reported that Dr. Snead was usually there at the other end of life too. “The poor fellow had to be the pallbearer at everybody’s funeral. Every time one of his patients died, he’d have to help carry him to the grave.”
Mrs. Lindsey recalls one death in particular. Her father, as the only doctor in the county, was also the county coroner. The coroner was supposed to pronounce a person dead before a funeral home could take the body. One morning they got a call during office hours from a man who wanted to go to work, but during the night another man had climbed into his pickup truck and died.
