Twelve years of politics in Rappahannock County have been interesting, fun, stimulating - and also disappointing. Why the last? Because of the slight attention devoted by politicians, and others involved in the process, voters included, to long term trends in our country, to timeproven principles.
Anyone reviewing the changes over the past 50 years must be convinced that something is wrong in the United States, seriously so. How, then, do we change? A reasoned response calls for the long view, a turn to principles to recover our bearings, our understanding of what makes a society healthy.
It is easy to explain the neglect of principles and the long view:
•Until recently, the major political parties agreed on goals, though not on means.
•History and principles are not easy to “sell;” no firm handshake, no attractive personality, and unsuitable for the 30-second spot!
