The Smith campaign, Mr. Woodward added, “is a long-shot which has been transformed into a potential upset.” The feeling around the campaign headquarters, “teeters between exhaustion and cautious optimism.”
The campaign plans no changes during the find few days, he said. “Our strategy has served us well so far.”
According to Mr. Goolrick, Congressman Slaughter will campaign hard all weekend to make up for lost time. He said he is confident Mr. Slaughter will win, but made no predictions as to the margin of victory. “I’m not going to get into that.”
