To the editor:
We who hope that war in Iraq and Saudia Arabia will be avoided must tell our elected officials how we think and feel.
Increasingly disturbing are reports that thousands more U.S. military personnel may be sent and that our government has never set a ceiling on the number we expect to station in Saudia Arabia and the Persian Gulf. Alarming too is a drumbeat of opinion that, “There may be no alternative to war. ”
I noted especially that the need for many more potential warriors is said to stem in part from the Iraqi response to what we have done out there so far: in effect, we are participating in an escalating arms race. One news article said that in addition to our expected 310,000 troops, we are looking for 250,000 from other, allied nations.
