Woodward rejected Mr. Goolrick’s charges of negative campaigning. “David has been out there, talking about the issues. He has also drawn a contrast between himself and Congressman Slaughter on those issues.”
Mr. Woodward suggested that it is the Slaughter campaign which is misinterpreting Smith’s message. “He has never had to defend his record. His people are apparently thinskinned. They have responded to the spotlight put on his record as negative campaigning. The fact is, your spoken word and your votes are your record.
“They seem to feel it is wrong to bring to the public’ attention his record. This is all fair game. David Smith,” Mr. Woodward added, “has never resorted to personal attacks on French Slaughter the man or his family — unlike the Slaughter surrogates who have attacked A1 Smith.”
