Freed from his Congressional responsibilities by the budget agreement reached last weekend, incumbent Republican D. French Slaughter Jr. hit the campaign trail this week on a Whirlwind tour of the sprawling Seventh District.
Meanwhile, Democratic challenger David M. Smith’s charge that Mr. Slaughter voted to protect “Savings and Loan crooks” drew an angry response contained in a letter from the Congressman, who demanded that Mr. Smith apologise to the voters.
