in the collapse of really big governments, the Communist ones, totalitarian, absolute, all-encompassing. Their subjects, willingly or not, accepted them in a trade of freedom for security and a vague future heaven on earth. Freedom they lost at once. The promised benefits never materialized, at least not at a standard they could accept. Hence the recent and continuing revolutions in the Eastern Bloc.

Nor were the failures only economic and political. The character of citizens under Communist domination followed the patterns described above, especially in the Soviet Union, longest - over 70 years - under totalitarian controls: widespread alcoholism, shoddy workmanship, thefts from state factories, popular demoralization generally. The pattern holds, the lessons of history are proven again, today, before our eyes.
