We must change course. Why and how? The “Why” should be plain: the lessons of history, our own experience, and the evidence from Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, and other big government countries all cry out for corrective action, soon. Have expanding governments produced the solutions advertised? Are those on welfare fewer and better off after 20 years and hundreds of billions of dollars? Has education improved with President Carter’s Department of Education and more hundreds of billions in added spending? Not when Americans students rank 13 of 13 in science and math, 11 of 13 in social studies and language, among advanced countries. Is housing more plentiful since governments’ spending and involvement in that industry exploded? Is the character of the American people improved since emphasis shifted from personal to collective responsibility, not the doing of governments but encouraged by their policies?
