Do we want to be represented in Congress by someone who we can never be quite sure is telling the truth? I think not.
Mr. Slaughter, apparently recognizing the nature of the campaign to be waged against him, decided his reelection campaign would be better served by remaining actively involved in the job that he was elected to perform. “Our representative on the Hill has staked his reputation on being a man of integrity concentrating on ‘constituent services,’ meaning that most of his effort is toward helping the little guy who encounters problems with big government.” (News, Oct. 25). Also: “What he does beat is what any elected official should be doing well.” (News, Oct. 25).
Certainly, Mr. Slaughter’s way of doing his business in the manner as envisioned by our forefathers is an increasingly scarce commodity on the Hill! I guess, following the Rappahannock News’ logic, we would be better served if he were engaging in the exploitive behavior that constantly seems to make national headlines for the “heavy hitters” on the Hill.
No, rather than running around kissing babies and other assorted anatomical parts, he has remained active as our representative. He has been participating in the nationally serious matters of international affairs, the federal budget, and deficit reduction.
