Republicans Adopt
Contract With Voters

More than 100 Republicans signed the Contract With Virginia Wednesday at the Capitol. Within an hour of the signing, Lt. Gov. Donald S. Beyer Jr. called a press conference to rebut the vagueness of the document.
Sen. Walter A. Stosch, R-Henrico, said Republicans adopted this written pledge as a measure of accountability to Virginians.
“While candidates have long run on their individual agendas,” Sen. Stosch said, “and while parties often adopt platforms, never to our knowledge has either of the two major political parties’ slate of candidates for the Virginia General Assembly offered a written pledge of what they will do collectively.”
As of Wednesday, Sen. Stosch said 112 Republican candidates had indicated support for the contract, which
