Foods that are higher sources of one or more of these nutrients and feature a nutrient content claims for a different nutrient must carry the following statement: “See (appropriate panel) for information about (nutrient requiring disclosure) and other nutrients.”
Unsalted peanut butter is such an example. It can carry a “low sodium” nutrient content claim because it contains less than 140 mg of sodium in a standardized serving.
However, if this amount of peanut butter contains more than 13 g fat as well, the package must also carry the statement listed above suggesting that the consumer turn to the Nutrition Facts section. This is to alert the consumer to check important nutrients other than sodium (in this case, fat) that should be monitored for a healthful diet.
