Another operation she observed removed an enormous tumor from the shoulder of a 15-year-old boy. Having volunteered at a veterinary clinic in the past, she did not turn squeamish. She admits, though, that watching a certain orthoscopic procedure in a hot operating room made her a little dizzy.
The program required Miss Ciolfi to spend several hours each week volunteering in a rehab unit, helping with brain-injured patients. And although research is now attractive to her — something she never dreamed she’d be interested in — she said she would not want to be separated from patients if she decides to pursue a medical career.
“1 really wasn’t thinking about medicine before this program. Now I’m thinking about it a lot more. This really gave me a better background before 1 plunged in.”
Although her work with Dr. Abood was at times frustrating, as procedure after procedure failed, she and the rest of the stall were finally rewarded for their hours of painstaking labor.
“After trying several different ways, it did work. So if they won’t give her the grant because they say, ‘That won’t work,’ she has my research to show that it does.”
Does she regret the lost opportunity to have a surgical mentor?
“1 didn’t think research was interesting. But it turned out that I actually got to do a hands-on experiment that was significant. The people who had surgery mentorships mostly got to just watch . . . and 1 didn’t even look once in a microscope!”
