After reviewing comments submitted in response to its proposal to limit hiking on Old Rag Mountain during October weekends, the Shenandoah National Park has decided to go ahead with the program.
Twenty-seven, comments were received. Of those commenting 17 people favored use limits, three opposed any limitations whatsoever on use of the park, and five made other suggestions.
A free permit will be required to hike Old Rag from the trailhead in Weakley Hollow on the four weekends in October starting Saturday, Oct. 7 and including the Columbus Day Holiday on Monday, Oct. 9. Permits will not be needed on weekdays.
Permits will be issued on a firstcome, first-served basis at the temporary parking lot along Route 600 near Nethers. When the lot fills, no more permits will be issued and no more hikers will be admitted. Hikers will have to walk the .8 mile to the ridge trailhead, where rangers will give a brief wilderness orientation and check permits.
