disease-causing organism or its products. The body reacts to the presence of the vaccine by producing its own antibodies to fight the disease. Antibodies then remain “on guard” in the body, creating or increasing a natural immunity against the disease that may last for months or years.
It is the duration of this immunity that determines when and how often booster shots are required for each vaccine-preventable disease. For instance, the tetanus and diphtheria shot must be boosted every ten years to maintain immunity.
Some people do not respond to certain vaccines. The measles vaccine is administered in two doses because five percent of the population does not respond to the initial shot.
Are The Vaccines Safe?
“Most studies show that vaccines are sate,” said Dr. James Bums. He is the district Health Department director for five counties, including Fauquier. “Some cause local side effects in 10 or IS percent of children. There may be swelling qr soreness at the injection site, or the child might be irritable or feverish.”
According to Dr. Bums, cases of neurological disorders have been suspected to arise from the pertussis vaccine. “But it’s dillicult to prove they are from the pertussis vaccine because all kids get the vaccine but the neurological disorders are rare.”
