Federal indictments have been handed down in the second wave or prosecutions resulting from the ongoing Operation SOUP (Special Operation to Uncover Poaching).
Among those indicted on March 11 were Danny and Bonnie Sue Baldwin of Sperryville. The Baldwins returned to Federal District Court in Charlottesville on Monday for a preliminary hearing.
In addition to the poaching charges, Bonnie Sue Baldwin has been charged with being in possession of firearms after having been convicted of a felony. The maximum statutory penalty for the firearms charge is 10 years incarceration and a fine of $250,000.
Law enforcement officers executing a search warrant on the residence of Danny and Bonnie Sue Baldwin discovered 46 firearms at the residence, in addition to 51 bear galls and two whole bears stored in freezers.
Covert operation
Operation SOUP is an ongoing investigation into bear poaching and illegal trade of bear parts conducted by the National Park Service, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
U.S. Attorney Robert ,P. Crouch joined these agencies in a press conference Tuesday in Verona to announce his intention to aggressively prosecute the wildlife violators charged as a result of the investigation.
On March 11, 1999, a federal Grand Jury sitting in Charlottesville returned indictments against nine individuals charging them with violations of the Lacey Act, which prohibits the sale of illegally taken wildlife.
In addition to Danny and Bonnie Sue Baldwin, those indicted were Raymond Dove of Petersburg, W.Va.;
