She examined the trays every morning and evening with the intensity of a doctor looking for a tumor. Then she would turn to me and say, “Not doing much . . . are they?” with a sly smile.
“They’re coming along . . .they’re coming along,” I’d reply, but the truth of the matter was that they weren’t coming along at all.
I had planted them in straight Vermiculite to protect against the dreaded “damping off” that had done in my plants the previous year. That stuff just wasn’t providing much nutrition for my babies, so that when they finally emerged and got a bit of growth on them, I repotted them into some potting soil with a mild fertilizer in it. That gave them a big boost.
I had proven my point — and my bet — I thought. I had grown Impatiens from seeds. Case closed. Pay up.
