Reconsider whether you even need shrubs circling the house. Many newer homes are attractive right to the ground and look better with plantings a little away from the foundation.
Early spring is a great time to add shade trees as many have just arrived at local nurseries and our weather should stay cool while new roots establish. Look for yellowwood (cladrastis lutea), a little-known native tree that absolutely drips with white clusters of flowers every few years. Unusual and fun, yellowwood is now appearing at more nurseries than ever.
Sweet gum is wonderful for fancy leaves and fall color, not to mention fairly quick shade. Or plant an oak for future generations.
Spring in Virginia can be mercilessly brief. Better get your “gardening bug” in remission before the real fever hits!
