away, just box everything up. Label boxes of clutter according to room (“living room, misc.”, etc). If you don’t miss the contents after a few months, it may be a sign to get rid of them.

Paper contents too valuable to toss? Label one box “memorabilia” and from time to time sift through it. It is a good way to determine what is most precious. Letters from old flames, for instance, may best belong in the fireplace, While a letter from a favorite aunt from the old country may be something worth keeping.

Treat yourself

If you do not have a built in aversion to mess, you simply have to create your own, alternative motivation. And now at last, I can share my most effective invention and favorite chore: “incentive-based sweeping.”

What do I really want in the morning? Coffee. But, before I can have a cup of coffee, I must sweep the house. Sound cruel and unusual? Well, it works. (It doesn’t hurt to have a small house.) While the coffee is brewing, I sweep. Boy, does that coffee taste good.

Incentives should fit the task. A larger task such as cleaning the tub or the oven might merit a cup of coffee and biscotti at a cafe, for instance. French fries. Anything. Little treats can be great incentives.
