tress call did indeed enable the hawk to focus on and capture the bird it had chased into the window in the first place. Hawks are persistent.
Had Rutt not gone out to the rescue, the Cooper’s Hawk — a formidably fast and fierce predator — would have swooped in to snatch the stillmoving Cardinal from the ground. As it happened, the hawk waited — hidden and alert — for its meal.
Perceiving the situation from the Cardinal’s point of view provides insight. The bird was faced with two predators: A fierce one with feathers and another quite large one that walked on two legs. The bird reacted by using his formidable beak: it bit. A human being is perceived by birds as a predator. This is demonstrated to me each time I go out the back door which is near our bird feeder. Twenty or so birds flee the area and take shelter high in the maple tree or into the dense interior of the privet bush.
