rumor, it is not the culprit in allergy attacks. That is actually ragweed, a wind-pollinated plant that puts out clouds of the aggravating stuff. Goldenrod is insect pollinated, and how often have you heard a bumblebee sneeze?
Goldenrod will stand up to weather that wilts more sensitive plants.
In winter, turn to the American holly for a bright spot of color that will also feed robins, waxwings and mockingbirds.
There are many more natives which can lend charm to your garden, at little maintenance cost.
An easy way to learn more about Virginia’s native plants is to visit the Native Plant Trail at the Virginia State Arboretum at Blandy Farm in Clarke County.
Dedicated last November, the trail features some 60 trees, and shrubs, and more than 700 perennials, ferns and grasses, specifically suited to a shade and semi-shade environment.
You can stroll the trail and see these natives in their habitat, checking form and color and visualizing how they would look on the home front.
In the future, the trail will be extended to take in an open field habitat and a pond habitat to spotlight other species of native plants.
